Help us.

August 8, Alina Sarfraz.

It’s stupidly hot. Sun is withering my brain. I’m lonely, not sleeping, and bored out of my skull. I’d give anything to be back in my room with the internet and my computer. Why, why, why did I agree to this research anyway?

Oh, yeah. Money. I should’ve thought it through. I’m—I’m not well enough to be here alone.

I can’t cope. I can! It’ll be all right. I’ve been through worse, and I want to find out what the hell is going on at Ladybower. For the first time in my life, I’m a proper scientist instead of a gamer who can’t be away from her computer. Something is amiss at Ladybower. It’s pulling me in, luring me with some sort of chemical carrot. If I were at home, I’d contact my therapist.

I can’t emphasise enough how much the weather is affecting me and what’s left of the reservoir. I’ve never known a summer like it. The energy from the extreme temperature radiates and consumes like a greedy, gobbling monster. This morning, I watched the sun move higher in the sky and became afraid and claustrophobic, shit-scared as a little kid. Across the horizon, a shimmering band of heat swept the fields and took hold. Nothing could get away or hide. It would’ve been profound to witness if it hadn’t been so unnatural and uncomfortable. Heat bounced off the grass and the branches, and by 11:00 a.m., I’d had enough. Could’ve cried for rain. These last few days, I’ve believed there must be a higher being playing with this world we think is ours, wagging a reproachful finger as we bugger up the weather patterns and pollute the sky with chemicals.

So, yeah. A raised temperature can cause the brain to behave in ways it normally wouldn’t, so it’s not surprising I’m discombobulated, which doesn’t mean I’ve lost control of my faculties altogether.

Some boring info: During the last week, I’ve trekked fifty miles around the outer reservoir and uncovered a few minor anomalies.

The first oddity happened three days ago. I went down to the old village and examined the piles of bricks and shapes of ancient houses. It’s unsettling to think of the families who lived there before the waters were let loose. Walking on the ground of a reservoir was unnerving as well as a bit dank and revolting, as were the crumbling buildings where houses used to stand.

I lost some time; I don’t know how? Maybe I fainted. I expect kids had left the package, but it gave me a shock nonetheless. They’d poked it into a corner like in Blair Witch. It wasn’t a body, obviously, but a strange skin-like thing that resembled a tail. I expect it came from a dressing-up costume. Gangs of kids have probably come here at night dressed as lizards. Though I haven’t seen any kids, and the reservoir isn’t near any town.

The tail’s inside my research hut now, along with the many green scales and claws I’d come across.
